About Granite Countertops
Origins, Colors, Renovations
The word granite comes from the Latin granum,
a grain, in reference to the grained structure of such a crystalline
rock. Granite occurs as stock-like masses and is often associated
with mountain ranges and frequently of great extent. Granite has
been intruded into the crust of the Earth during all geologic periods,
and is widely distributed throughout the Earth.
There are many different colors from which to
choose. In actual fact about 1,000 of the most popular colors are
mainly distributed of the approximately 30,000 known materials.
This number increases monthly especially as the Brazilians and Indians
bring even more new quarries to the fore. Realistically Africa has
not even started yet therefore expect some fantastic granite and
marble colors to come from that region.
All the colors are natural, nothing has been added
to make these stones more beautiful or acceptable to the home owner
or project specifier. Their natural veins add character and warmth
to any area plus the reduction in processing costs over the past
few years have made them more accessible to the home owner. The
choice is yours, blue, red, white, black, green and brown, sparkling
granites such as the Black Galaxy or the incredible European labradorites...there
is bound to be one that takes your heart. These affordable granites
have now made it possible for those remodeling their homes and for
new build construction to have complementary colors for almost any
type of natural wood or contemporary material.
Not surprisingly color usage varies from country
to country. In North America almost "anything" seems to
be the order of the day with many buyers demanding what they want
rather than considering resale values. Granites with lots of movement
and especially so with gold, brown and blues being very popular.
Which granite color is best? This will depend whether you are paying
an interior designer or going with your heart! Lighter colors will
warm up dark cabinets meanwhile darker granites add that touch of
"class" to lighter cabinetry. It cannot be emphasized
enough to ensure you get a good sized sample or ask to see the enormous
slabs themselves to actually see what your cabinets and overall
color scheme will look like. Once you have decided the granite color
you require, do ensure that you see the slabs you want, select them
and reserve them with your name. If you are waiting for new incoming
stocks, view the slab colors again before approving your order.
Granite slabs with a lot of veins and movement vary so much from
block to block that you need to be happy that is what you actually
want.
Because of its hardness and comparative cheapness
in relation to marble, granite is often used to make kitchen countertops.
A granite countertop can be cut in any shape, and it is virtually
un-scratch able. Aesthetically it is an ideal material for both
domestic and commercial design and especially so when considering
their easy care and the perceived added value as a home improvement
investment, even though granite countertops are nowadays just a
bit more costly than the standard inferior arborite or corian equivalents.
Fabrication, Templates, Edge Profiles
All in One Kitchen Renovations is one of many
companies around the world that fabricate countertops from the massive
granite slabs that are manufactured in quarries in several countries
in our globe. The slabs which are generally 10 feet by 6 feet in
dimension each are cut from enormous stock blocks in Brazil, India,
Africa, Italy and other European countries and go through a surface
polishing and resining process.
These slabs are imported through several suppliers
to Canada and then shipped to All in One's stone yard in Calgary
where we stock hundreds of the most popular and exotic stones. Our
job is to cut, edge and details these slabs to serve as beautiful,
elegant, and astoundingly durable countertops for your home. The
final product's shape is determined by a template that is made with
plastic material cut from the layout of your kitchen cabinets. Customers
select thestyle of edge profile that they wish to be fabricated
from their carefully selected slabs.
After finalizing the countertops in our shop
our installers transport the final product to customer's homes and
carefully mounted and fit for household use. Granite slabs are generally
provided in 3/4 inch (2cm) and 1&1/4 inch (3cm) thickness. All
in One specializes in the fabrication of 3cm granite slabs. We are
not interested in double edging 2cm pieces as some companies do.
3cm granite provides a one piece solid countertops with a seamless
edge, it is more durable and much more visually pleasing.
